    Rut in SW Colorado?

Just curious if anyone on here is from anywhere close to the Ridgeway, Cimarron, Co. area, or has heard anything about if the rut is starting to hit around the Silverjack Reservoir area? Going to be out there the 8th thru the 17th and hoping the elk are talking well by then! 8-)

Wish I could help you out. I'm in Alamosa. Some spots in the state they are already fired up. The unit we've been hunting(85) they are throwing out some locator bugles. But not too fired up yet.

I wouldnt count on the elk rutting when you get here, maybe near the end of the hunt, the elk "rut" the same time every year...late sept. I believe a large part of people that think they hear rutting (bugles) are hearing hunters bugling, then they think the bulls are firing up. That area see quite a bit of hunting pressure, which means quite a few hunter bugling theirs heads off. That said, you should have a great time, and that area is one of our most beautiful spots.

L-T is right. The rut is triggered by daylihgt hours, so the cows come into heat the same time each year. Hot weather does put a damper on movement of cows, hence bulls as well. Also bulls do talk less in the heat. The peak of the rut in most rocky mountan states is the 18th-21st. Many guys like pre rut as the bulls are in the process of herding up. Personally I like the peak best as that is when I have found bulls to be most vocal and hence be able to be located. What you want is a good cold snap to get them talking, and hopefully no full moon. The nastier the weather at this time of year the better.

Thanks guys! Yes it is beautiful there! We were out there in the fall of '08, when I killed the bull in my avatar, but we were there a week earlier than we are going this year. We hardly heard any bugles at all in '08, so I'm hoping they are a bit more vocal this year. Also hoping the Aspens are starting to turn as well, we were too early the other time for that too!

The bull I called in for my buddy on the last evening of our hunt in '08.

So true elk! :?:  We will do our best anyway! I won't care if we don't get anything, just being out there in the mountains is enough!

While I absolutely love to hear a bugle mixed with all sorts of mews, there is nothing like the smell of a rutting bull!

    Re: Rut in SW Colorado?

Sorry, should have updated sooner. We hunted hard every day and got close a couple of times to some cows, but never could quite close the deal. There were quite a few more other hunters there than when we were there in '08 and I think they had been pushed around quite a bit. Never were quite sure if you heard something if it was an elk or just another hunter. I know of two bulls killed while we were there, a small 5x5 and a 6x6. I didn't see either but talked to some people that saw the 6x6 and it sounded like he was pretty big. The 6x was killed right at treeline, and he had two cows and a raghorn with him. So as far as the hunting went, it was slow, but we all had a good time!
