I've been doing for 5 years now. The whole family really enjoys doing it. So far i've found 603 caches. That may sound like a lot, but there are people who have found like 20,000!!! I guess they never sleep. 8)

What are you looking for at the locations?
It depends on the type of cache, but typically it will be an ammo box or rubber maid container or something along those lines. Other times it will be something small like a film cannister or even smaller.

The cache will contain a log book for you to sign your user name and or log your thoughts about the hunt.

Some times they are hidden in urban areas and other times you may have to go on a hike in the woods to locate the cache.
Where they're hidden is pretty much limited only by your imagination. I've found them in hollow stumps, under rock piles, up in trees, velcroed or magnetically attached in various out of the way places or even right out in the open, but cammoed to match the surroundings.

Often times there are items for trade. Usually just little trinket type things for the kids but other times there's good stuff like coins or gift cards etc. If you take something you're supposed to leave something of equal or greater value.

When you're done, you re-hide it where you found it and then log your visit online and geocaching.com

Give it a try, it's great fun and excercise!

We have been doing it for the last couple of years. Don't get to do it as much as I would like. I have some found wonderful, scenic places I never knew existed through geocacheing. Also found some good hunting spots on natioal forest land. I suggest that if you have a GPS and have not tried it, that you do. :(

You're absolutely right, I've visited many neat areas that I would've never known about had it not been for geocaching.
Whenever we take a trip we always look to see what caches are along our route so we can break up the trip. Keeps the kids from asking "are we there yet?!" LOL

I see you're in MO. My first cache was in Mo, near Springfield. I was actually out snake hunting with a guy from Bass Pro who is working on updating the Mo. field guide to Reptiles and Amphibians. I was looking under a rock ledge and instead of finding a snake, I found a cache. I had no idea what it was, but the other guy was familiar with the game and told me about it. When I got home, I looked it up on the net & i've been hooked ever since.

I've heard of it but have never tried it. We teach archery, fishing, crafts and help check and monitor blood sugars, at Kamp Kno Koma (camp for diabetic kids) and one of the classes the kids can take is geocaching. I'm going to have the guy who does the class show me how it is done.
