I have been asked by the local La Porte City paper to write a weekly article about hunting.
My first article will be in next weeks paper.
As fellow hunters, what would you want to see or write about?
My first article was 10 things you should be doing now to get ready for deer season.

Throw me some ideas :sad:

we all need practice and better skills of how to field judge the size of the prey.

It sounds like a great opportunity to promote the idea of conservation and hunting. In today's environment with the "Antihunters", PETA, Friends of the Animals, etc., we need all the positive public relations we can muster. An article featuring hunter ethics and conservation as it relates to deer herd management and the positive effect hunting has on the overall health of the herd (example) itself would educate people who might have a negative view on hunting.

Sounds awesome!! As a Hunters -Ed instructor in PA I alway teach tree stand safty as subject that id often over looked by those starting out.

You could write something about what got you into hunting, whether it be your grandfather, favorite uncle, dad etc...

How about an article on different types of hunting. Out here in the west we dont use tree stands or ground blinds. When in pursuit of a bull elk or a big muley buck its all spot and stalk hunting at elevations of 7,000 to 12,000 feet!

Preseason scouting techniques as well as how to find a stand location, how to decide where to setup and prep for a successful hunt.

Oh and way to go day what a great way to get your shops name out.

How about info on selecting the correct equipment for your hunting needs, judging yardages (something I struggle with at times) or how to properly field dress your kill.

These are all great ideas

I would write about being properly equipped based on the hunting environment. I see so many folks not prepared for; heat, cold, rain, snow, etc... I always check the weather forecast before heading out and always make sure I have the proper gear for the predicted conditions. Also discuss how to get to and from the stand location; ex: do not put on all your pack gear to walk 5 miles causing you to sweat to death.

With the number of tree stand accidents on the rise as more hunters move to the sky, we need to stress good tree stand safety, how to find/buy a good stand, the proper use of a safety harness, how to climb a tree, how to come down, etc..

I would even toss in a story or two about a great hunt and then follow it up with an awesome recipe for that particular animal.

You could write about the importance of good bow maintenance, tuning, etc. (which will bring them to you)

Post season scouting and shed hunting. And all the things everyone else said. I wish our local paper did that. This could be a great way to promote our sport.

Great job dave i know what it's like when you walk in the woods go to your tree and you stand is not there.Left it out for one day and it's gone.Keep up the good writing and those link's up for us to read.
