Sent in for my '07 Kansas archery tag, Unit A3, north central part of the state. Hopefully I'll have good news come July. My brother-in-laws dad has buddies in Cloud county. Has anyone out there in Rossland hunted this area?

I have in-laws that farm ground in Washington, Marshall and Riley. Just to north and east of Cloud. They have an outfitter guide and I believe I was told they had eight big deer come off eight to twelve points. There is a lot of good ground in the north central part of the state. I have not been lucky enough, but I have had the opportunity if I was would have been setup right for some nice deer. Last year I had a ten at about 80 yards, that I do not no if I would have been able to pull the bow back if he would have gotten in range. Sat there and watched him for probably twenty minutes graze, and could not get him to come any closer.

There are lots of Outfitters in KS. Fifteen years ago permission from farmers was all that was necessary and they were glad for you to help reduce the deer population on their property. Today the "cash crop" (deer) is what drives most farmers to lease their land. It's getting more and more expensive to lease land to hunt, and since there are limited public hunting areas in KS, it is going to impact the bowhunting of many hunters in the future, unless you have deep pockets, own your own land, or you have other connections that will put you on a deer stand. I certainly don't blame the farmers, it's the Outfitters who are driving up the lease costs for the average guy. In other words, why not lease the place for thousands of dollars as opposed to letting someone hunt for free. There is a ray of hope in all this , as I talked to an old farmer this spring about hunting on his property. I asked him how much for the lease, and he replied, "I don't lease any more, I had a bad experience with that, no charge, respect my property, and you can buy me a present if you get a big old buck!" Sorry if this is off topic, but this is my perception of bowhunting in KS at this time. If you have a good hunting spot, and you are not being charged an arm and a leg, be thankful!

Tater's right. Count yourself lucky to know someone that owns land and let's you hunt. The good news is any place in Kansas is a good deer hunting spot ( except for public land during rifle season). I have hunted all over this state and have taken or seen big bucks and lot's of does in each place.
