I recently won this on a gun ticket, and was wondering if someone could give me a little bit more information on it. I was planning on buying a handgun soon for home protection, and to carry along in archery season since Pennsylvania recently passed a law allowing you to do so. I got lucky and won this, but I don't know too much about them. Is this a good gun for these purposes, or would you trade it in on something else. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

.45 ACP

You can't beat the deal you got. I would say that the 1911 is tried and proven its worth from the battle fields of early wars and even today Marine Corps and Special OPS units are going back to it in Tactical variants. I am not sure which model you have but if you check out Springfield Armory's web site you should be able to get all the specifics you need. Whether it is a Mil spec version or a custom accurized version it should do whatever you want it to.

THe 1911 is a great weapon to have, but if you were looking for a conceal carry weapon (depending on the model) it is a bit cumbersom to conceal. Personally I would probably trade it and look at something a little smaller and lighter. Kimber makes some good one's and for the money the S/W Sigma in a .40 is really hard to beat. :(

I routinely carry a 1911 so it can be done! Find a good holster for her (Milt Sparks Summer Special comes to mind) and practice with it. I don't think the 1911 is the best carry gun for someone new to it, spend some time at the range and get use to it. If you don't have time for this I would suggest trading it for an Springfield XD or Glock.
